The Hotspot question type allows participants to interact with an image by selecting specific areas or "hotspots." This question type is ideal for visual assessments, enabling more engaging and interactive experiences by requiring users to identify or choose regions on an image that correspond to the correct answers. For example, you can use hotspot questions to evaluate employees’ technical skills by having them identify parts of machinery, software interfaces, or workflow diagrams.

Create Hotspot Question

To create a Hotspot question, navigate to the question modal and select the 'Hotspot' question type. Then, upload the image you want to use for this question. The maximum file size for Hotspot images is 1 MB.

Once the image is uploaded, you can start creating “hotspot areas.” These hotspots will identify the correct answers to the question. For instance, if the question is, “Please indicate where France and Turkey are located on the map,” you would mark France and Turkey as “hotspot” areas.

You can choose from a rectangular, circular, or polygonal hotspot for each area. If you use a polygon, complete the shape by clicking the red dot. Ensure the entire correct area is included to avoid false positives or negatives.

You can add multiple hotspots to your image. However, make sure that the "Maximum Selection" setting reflects the total number of hotspots you want participants to be able to select. For example, if you create three hotspots, set the "Maximum Selection" to three if you want participants to select all of them.

Scoring

Hotspot questions are scored similarly to regular multiple-choice questions. For more detailed information on scoring, please refer to this article.

After adding the hotspots, you will see an option to enter the correct answers. These answers will be displayed to participants either after they submit their responses (if they have Instant Answers enabled) or when they view their results.

Reporting

In the Data & Analytics tab, you can see whether each participant answered correctly or incorrectly. The Response Details section will show which specific hotspots the participant selected.

Limitations

Since this question type is new, it has a few limitations. At present, the Hotspot question does not support custom scoring and the Q1 email embed options.
